Jesus’ Last Words
The banner next to St. Mark for Lent says “It is Finished.” I had a child ask me about that last weekend, so I thought I would explain that to all of you. We will hear that verse this year on Good Friday towards the end of the Passion narrative, which is from the Gospel of John 18:1-19:42. These are the last words that Jesus says before he dies on the cross.
Here is the complete verse from John 19:30
When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
John’s Gospel is the only one where Jesus says “It is finished.” Jesus shouted this and it was a shout of triumph. His triumph was that victory over death was accomplished. God’s plan was accomplished. His only begotten Son, Jesus had died for our sins on the cross, would be buried and would rise again on the 3rd day (Easter Sunday).
These three words are so powerful. I suggest that you contemplate them during Lent and that you thank Jesus every day for dying for our sins.
