The celebration of the Eucharist is the most important act that we as Catholics can perform. Besides the spiritual preparation and holiness of the act itself, the planning of the celebration is imperative to offer ourselves in prayer and thanksgiving to the Lord. The planning of liturgical music is not an exception. The songs and hymns we sing as a family every week are carefully selected from a collection of songs/hymns that have been denominated as liturgical. The weekly selected songs are in accordance with the readings of the day. This helps not only to unify us in song but to reinforce the message of the sacred scriptures. Most of the lyrics of our music are passages from the bible and even complete psalms. The fine print at the bottom of the score sheets usually contains the scripture passage on which the song or hymn is based.
In addition, all the music used during the celebration of the Holy Mass is to be liturgical in
nature.
