Depression
Nearly 30% of adult Americans report a diagnosis of depression at some time in their life. Researchers from the University of Cambridge conducted a study on nearly 290,000 people, 13,000
of whom were diagnosed with depression. They studied a variety of factors including genetics,
lifestyle, and brain structure of the participants, and concluded that having a healthy lifestyle reduced the risk of depression by 57%.
Below are seven healthy lifestyle factors that could lower the risk of depression according to the
researchers.
• Get enough sleep
• Don’t smoke
• Socialize frequently
• Exercise regularly
• Moderate alcohol intake
• Consume a healthy diet
• Move and connect with nature.
Mental health is closely connected to physical health. It is vital to contact your doctor or go to
your local emergency room if you have unresolved depression or have suicidal thoughts.
