Stations of the Cross

What are the Stations of the Cross?

The Stations of the Cross are a communal prayer in which we embark on a spiritual journey, reflecting on the key moments of Jesus’ final hours. This devotion traces His path from His condemnation by Pontius Pilate to His burial in the tomb. Some believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary visited the places of her Son’s Passion daily while she was in Jerusalem. Through the Stations of the Cross, we are invited to do the same, engaging in meditation, contemplation, and prayer as we join in His suffering and death.

Can I obtain a Plenary Indulgence by Praying the Stations of the Cross?

Yes, a plenary indulgence can be earned by prayerfully participating in the Stations of the Cross. While our sins may be forgiven, our souls still require purification, either on earth or in purgatory. A plenary indulgence removes the temporal punishment needed for this purification.

The Manual of Indulgences notes that the pious exercise usually involves 14 devotional readings and vocal prayers, but it’s sufficient to meditate on the Passion and death of Jesus, without focusing on each individual station.

Progressing from one station to the next is required, but if it’s difficult for everyone, the leader can move while others remain in place. Those impeded can still gain the indulgence by spending at least 15 minutes reading and meditating on the Passion.

To receive the indulgence, one must be detached from sin (even venial), and meet three conditions: confess sins, receive Holy Communion, and pray for the pope’s intentions. These can be completed before or after the Stations, though it’s recommended to do them on the same day.
